Bangalore urban water supply- Chlorine use to disinfect water

In Bangalore City waters and private water tanker waters are stored in sump tanks of varying capacity by households.As water comes infrequently, usually 2 hours every alternate day, storage systems have to be created by households. Typically a residual chlorine of 0.2 mg/litre is ensured by the water service provider. However if water is bought from a private water tanker there will be no residual chlorine at all.
At times of disease outbreaks it is good to chlorinate the water in your sump tank. Remember chlorination works well when the Ph of the water is between 6.80 and 7.20 so check for ph of the water that you need to chlorinate. This is done using a ph strip paper.
Then begins the process of chlorination. Usually strong bleaching powder available in medical shops is used. For 2000 litres of water use 2 spoons of bleaching water and mix it with about 2 to 5 litres of water in a bucket. Pour the bucket of water into the sump tank and mix thoroughly. After some time say half an hour check for residual chlorine using a chloroscope. A chloroscope can be bought in chemical analysts shops. If the residual chlorine is between 0.2 to 0.5 mg/litre, the water has been treated for safe use. Avoid secondary contamination of this water.
REMEMBER AT ALL TIMES THAT CHLORINE IS A DANGEROUS CHEMICAL AND NEEDS TO BE HANDLED WITH ABSOLUTE CAUTION.CHILDREN SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO HANDLE CHLORINE.
