I went down to a large pond near my house which I have being going to collect daphnia and gammarus pulex at for some sticklebacks I caught.

I've found that during the night they all come to one part of the pond nearest some street lights on a road behind and below the pond. So I went down at 1am like the true freak I am and spent probably no more than 10 minutes catching these daphnia babies! *edit: I should probably mention that it's autumn now and there's more daphnia around in the summer. I'm kinda looking forward to next summer, as are my bullhead and sticklebacks.*

I used a technique that Ian Russell (http://www.interactives.co.uk/) showed me; by using a muslin net and wafting it through the water to collect the daphnia!

In the glass jar they're in on the video you can see them being forced into a swirl at the bottom (clockwise on the second shot). I'm not entirely sure but I think it's because most of them are swimming towards the bright light I had next to the jar. They are swimming toward the light because they know that most of the single celled creatures that they feed on move towards the light. They must be swimming downward slightly too hence why it's swirling.

All the daphnia are spread around my house in various containers now and in various fishes and amphibians stomachs...
