Update: after receiving an email from Cam Linke about his cousin's humanitarian efforts, I have decided to give the funds to that cause, rather than through the RLP Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund. This was no small decision, but I feel that once you read the following message, you will agree with it.

As all of you know by now, Haiti is in dire need of assistance. Many of you have already donated money or supplies, but I need to ask you to do so once more.

A close friend of mine, David Pierre-Louis, left a few days after the earthquake to find his mother in Port-au-Prince. He found his family safe, but their homes and the surrounding neighborhood have been destroyed. Unfortunately, what he did not find, was aid reaching the those around him. David, myself, and our friend Charles are going to Port-au-Prince next week and we need you to help us. The most pressing needs in Haiti right now are drinking water and basic medical and survival supplies. We hope to purchase and bring water purification systems with us (please see attached files) to provide a stable source of drinking water to as many neighborhoods as we can. Each unit can supply 12 gallons of clean water per minute from any water source. Each unit costs $10,000, but the company is willing to sell us 3 for $20,000. They only weigh 125lbs each, are easy to transport and set up.

We fly to Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic on Feb.1. From there we will drive a truck with the water purifiers and other supplies across the Hatian border and into Port-au-Prince, bypassing the bureaucracy and red tape holding up other efforts.

I want to stress that 100% of funds you give will go directly to the people of Haiti. We have financed our transportation and other expenses and will not use a single cent of what you contribute on ourselves. Though there are many large organizations you could give to, their very size and structure impedes the rapid dispursement of relief to those in need. In contrast, the three of us will be going directly to the neighborhoods David is well acquainted with, and has relationships and lines of communication already established.

The extreme urgency of the situation doesn't allow us the time we need to recieve donations online (paypal etc. has a 3-5 day delay on any transaction). Because the banks in Haiti are not operational, we need cash donations, and we need to have them in Seattle no later than Friday, January 29th. We do have a registered Tax ID and an account set up, so we will be able to issue reciepts upon request and after our return from Haiti.

Situations like this are overwhelming and sometimes it is difficult to know how one's contribution can help. You can be directly involved by helping us purchase these water purification systems.
